Successful presentation

This was less practical/concrete than the previous courses. If I had the time again, I wouldn't bother.

Getting started with public speaking

Rethinking public speaking

  • Remember that you're telling a story

A formula for successful presentation

The formula

  • Introduction

    • Salutation

      • Welcome

      • Self-introduction

      • Acknowledgements

    • Review of structure

      • Beginning

      • Middle

      • End

    • Compelling point

      • Announcement

      • The compelling point

      • Why it is important

  • Content (repeatable unit)

    • Topic

    • Data

    • Analysis

  • Conclusion

    • Summary

    • Thoughts for discussion

    • Thanks

The introduction

  • Remember to acknowledge people

Content

  • Finishing each content unit with a keyword (or key point) helps summarize the message and transition into the next unit

Practising your self

Evolving your presentation

  • Try videoing yourself or practising in front of a mirror

  • Try reverse outlining (taking the full script and creating an outline from it)

  • The most important section to practice is the introduction

  • Make sure to speak slowly at the start

Body language

  • Experiment with your stance (e.g., at an angle vs. straight on with rear hand in pocket)

Engaging with the world

Dealing with questions

  • Consider asking their name and telling them that it's a great question
